I usually use run level 3, i.e. I do a console login and then run startx from the command line. Having just moved from Fedora 7 to Fedora 8 my sound no longer works when I use run level 3 as above. However if I switch my system to run level 5 so I do a graphical gdm login the sound works. In run level 3 the sound doesn't work because of permissions, if I manually set the permissions on the devices in /dev/snd to 0666 then sound works in run level 3. However when in run level 5 the sound works with the permissions on /dev/snd devices at the default 0660. I've compared the output of "ps -ef" for the two run levels and I can't see any significant differences. Can anyone else explain what the issue might be? -- Chris Green
