Obviously I could do:-

    yum remove <package>
    yum install <package>

but it seems like there ought to be an easier way to do it.

yum 3.2-11 (in Rawhide) has a reinstall option but the latest yum in Fedora 8 doesn't. You could file a RFE and request an update if it is not already done.
