You can look at the /sbin/ifdown script to see what > script it looks for, and when they are run. > [...] Your suggestion didn't work, because near the bottom of /sbin/ifdown it had: DEVICE = wlan0 DEVICETYPE = eth whereas in order to work as indicated, it needed: DEVICETYPE=wireless . This looks like a bug to me but I am sure there will be better informed judgments. In any case, the information provided allowed me to easily hack the result I needed. Thanks for your help, Mike.
