I believe the message is generated when HAL tries to run as a user other then the one that "owns" the console. For example, when I am logged into the GUI as mikkel, then the USB stick will be mounted on a mount point off of /media, and if it has the usual VFAT file system, then the owner will be mikkel.mikkel so that I can access the files. If it has a file system that does support UID/GID, then those will apply instead. On Tue, 2008-02-12 at 08:55 -0600, Mikkel L. Ellertson wrote:Tom Holroyd wrote:Are you running in run level 3 or 5? If in run level 5, do you have more then one GUI login at the same time?Sorry if this has been asked before, but I just upgraded to Fedora 7 and when I plug in my USB stick I get "Error org.freedesktop.Hal.PermissionDenied." The Details box says "Not inactive session".Level 5, only one user (+root). Not more than one GUI login. Any idea how to set the permissions? Do I need to edit /etc/fstab, or some hotplug config file?
You should not need to edit anything, unless you have an entry in /etc/fstab for the USB stick. This would prevent HAL from auto-mounting it. You can check /var/log/messages to see if there are more details about why it failed.
