Better yet, take a look at DJVu: http://djvu.org/ this is exactly the job it was designed for. I've not used it myself, although I have some projects that could use it if I ever get around to them.
I've seen conflicting reports as to whether it's usable as an OSS product, but there is a 'djvulibre' package in the Fedora repo, so that seems to be a good indication that it can be.
