Last update: today I checked the codepage of the SD card on a
university windows machine. It is codepage 862, as was the drive of
the machine. Then, upon inserting the card to my own Linux machine, it
automounted and came up in the correct charset! I don't recall making
any changes to my computer nor the SD card. Strange. For the archives,
if anyone else has the problem, try 'checking' the card in windows
with the command chcp.
