I got interested in an old thing I thought might still work. This you can do from a rescue disk that goes into grub, which is all the Fedora ones for some time. I wanted to type this in the grub and see if it works:

grub> root (hd1,4)
grub> kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.23.14-107.fc8 ro root=LABEL=/
grub> boot

Well the root part worked fine. But I tried all variations on the kernel description and it never took it. I removed LABEL=/ and put in /dev/sdxx and tried many. Then I made it
kernel /boot//vmlinuz-2.6.23.14-107.fc8 ro root=LABEL=/
and that didn't work. Tried all the /dev/sdxx variations.

It appears that maybe kernel has been changed in the new grub.

Are you using LVM?
You may need to specify the LV that it is on.
IE -

grub> root (hd1,4)
grub> kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.23.14-107.fc8 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01
grub> boot

mount |grep "on / " |cut -d" " -f1

should tell you the device being mounted as /

Nope no LVM. A strange BIOS however. But I did test with fdisk to see what drive the system was on with the DVD rescue running. So it was odd come to think of it. The root was hd(1,4) and I KNOW it was hd(0,4). I bet that is the problem!
