Looks like I'm still got some old RPMs installed. Yeup, some *very* old RPMs still installed! So old, they are a.out format! >>> I think that mkinitrd is at fault, not the kernel. OK, so not exactly, but mkinitrd needs a better checking methodology than the hack it is using. Yeup, removing the old ld.so (and all of the other old RPMs that depended on it) seem to have done it. It was a small challenge removing an old csh and replacing it with tcsh, but I got it done. Installation of the mew kernel now happens without a hitch! Thanks folks for pointing out the obvious. B^) It made me look a little bit closer at what is installed on my system. Yes, I've had to do some upgrades "the hard way" over the years, at one point this system was running RedHat 3.0.3..... The upgrade path (as I remember it) was: 3.0.3 -> 4.2 -> 5.1 -> 6.0 -> 6.2 -> 7.2 -> 7.3 -> 9 -> FC2 -> FC3 -> FC 5 -> F8. (whew!) A couple of them involved me installing RPMs by hand when anaconda screwed up. That probably explains some of the obsolete RPMs still installed. -- Kevin J.
