It is tricky to get grub on an ntfs system. I'm going out on a limb here, but since you can already multiboot from the apple to mac os or windows there should be a configuration file you can edit to add the external drive. Maybe as simple as
title f8
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
for the first partition on the external drive.
