What disk structure are you using?  No problems here with an ACER motherboard core duo machine. Six partitions on 250G sata drive

PRIMARY PARTITIONS
Grub multiboot partition
VISTA 64
EXTENDED PARTITION
     NTFS
     Linux swap
     F8 64
     F8 32

Everything has distinct labels.  If you are using logical volume manager make sure the volume names are different.
