It is confusing me as to what is the difference > between /dev/sda and /dev/sda1? ---- big difference bootloader should be in MBR (/dev/sda) unless you have provisions to chain the bootloader /dev/sda1 is the first partition and bios would have to know how to read from the filesystem (it can't).
