An alternative is to use the Livna freetype-freeworld package.

Sorry to not have any link handy, but AFAIK, you can use mock to help
out here.  setarch i386 mock -r fedora-8-i386 rebuild freetype*.src.rpm

(Where the freetype srpm has the bytecode_interpreter and
subpixel_rendering flags already set to the values you want.)

You need to add the user building the packages to the mock group
first.
