This message over in the freenx list had the clue that fixed it for me: http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/freenx-knx/2007-November/006233.html I changed the "unix:" strings to just ":" in the nxnode shell script, and I can now talk to the server (with a local nx session anyway - I'll try remote when I get home today).
