I tried various -b? parameters -- some appeared to go through the motions and
eventually I ended up with empty directories under ~/rpmbuild/RPMS and
~/rpmbuild/SRPMS. Others gave a stack of errors similar to the example I
posted. The only time I got anything at all in either of those directories was
when I told it to simply build me a srpm, which it did in less than a second.
However, as it obviously wouldn't compile that was a bit pointless.

I assumed that rpmdev-setuptree did all of that for me. This is my ~/.rpmmacros
file:

%_topdir %(echo $HOME)/rpmbuild
%_smp_mflags -j3
%__arch_install_post /usr/lib/rpm/check-rpaths /usr/lib/rpm/check-buildroot
