You might want to try pulseaudio as an option instead. I had similar
issues with gmplayer not able to play videos properly. Once I changed
the audio settings to use pulseAudio things are working fine.

Well actually given that IcedTea is based on OpenJDK, which is the next
release (Java 7), it would be nice if people could share their
experiences of running current Java Apps in this environment.
