F8 and ATI M6 with radeon problem

  Hello there,
I installed F8 on a fairly old laptop, Dell C600, with
and ATI mobility M6 card. This takes the radeon driver.
Installing was worrying. The auto-configured graphics didn't fit
right, and was fuzzy.
Well, now it is installed and I changed number of colours down to
16bits 'ordinary' graphics is fine, DRI and AIGLX are enabled and I can
run glxgears at 680fps, all I ever got.
(Actual I cannot switch on graphic effects - the right hand quarter of
the screen is missed off if I do. That was also true in F7. Never mind.)
But...ppracer or any other 3D graphics is horrible. The screen is
shifted 1cm left, and seems interlaced.
Can anyone suggest what might be at fault please?
       Thanks,
             Bill
