wxmaxima and xmaxima gui's cannot connect to Maxima

I'm running maxima under Fedora 6. It runs fine in a shell. If I start
wvmaxima or xmaxima, the gui's open but report they cannot connect to
maxima (it times out). I'm running maxima also on a Fedora 7 system and
the gui's have no problem connecting to maxima. Any idea on what is
going wrong under Fedora 6?
