Is this with the "intel" driver or the "i810" driver?

Using the "intel" driver with Intel 965 chipset is even worse: running
Google Earth there crashes the X server and it can't be restarted, nor
do any consoles work, so you have to reboot remotely or do a hard reset
to recover from this :-(.

GE is really a good test for video drivers, it seems...
