OK - thanks. I ran Miro from the command line and it produced some clues -
here's an example:
************************************
Playing item with renderer: <frontend_implementation.xinerenderer.Renderer
instance at 0xb185f6c>
INFO got file:///tmp/tmpb_jE5B.html
INFO got file:///tmp/tmpcyJzIz.html
************************************
on checking, I found some elements of Xine installed, but not Xine itself.
Installing it cured my problem. I'm running an nVidia card with the nVidia
drivers, and the results are stunning on the one video I just watched, a
little 'Hubblecast' from NASA/ESA on the Hubble telescope images from a
SuperNova
