It seems that dd could do it but I > wonder how fast it would be? dd would actually be the fastest method, but it would require more screw-turning than ripping out the existing hard drive and replacing it with the new one, then formatting "from new" and copying your data back onto it. Plus that method would give you the opportunity to throw out all of the accumulated "cruft" that you may have from failed experiments and the like. Your dollar might be better spent on getting a newer, larger hard drive than by getting another 160gb drive that matches what you already have. You might also want to consider installing the new drive as either a primary or secondary drive and using LVM to make the whole thing look like one big 300+gb drive instead of just having a single 160gb in your system.
