Alan Kay of Xerox created the Dynabook in 1969, and had nothing whatsoever to to with Microsoft. There have been several tablet computers issued since then, with varying levels of commercial success. If you are interested solely in Microsoft's take on tablet computing, the first MS operating system used on tablet pc's was MS-DOS, starting in 1989. And the first version of MS Windows for tablet pc's was an add-on to Windows 3.0 called Windows for Pen Computing in 1992. All of which pre-dates Windows XP by a substantial period of time.
