I run a CUPS-driven printer connected via USB. I see this all the time,
with the printer actually working. Some things to check.

1. Is the printer really, REALLY, connected? I once wasted a day
looking for a software problem, only to discover that the printer cable
was not quite as tight as it should be.

2. HAL (assuming its running) has its own ideas about what the printer
should be called. That causes confusion.

3. Check the CUPS printer page: http://localhost:631/printers. I have
three entries for one printer, and not by choice. You may find that you
do indeed have a working printer there.

4. Is your PRINTER env variable consistent with your CUPS name?

Good luck.
