It is a modem/router.  PPOE logs it in, and it does dhcp handling for my
local network.

I did not set MTU on the system. I didn't think that would be necessary
because the local interface to the router/modem is via standard 100mb
ethernet.  The modem is furnished by the provider and I expect that it
is setup correctly.  And I don't understand how that could affect the
operation of the modem out link.

But I could be wrong ;-)
