You tried "vncserver -geometry 800x600" and it didn't work?  That's
odd.

OK. I stopped the Xvnc server using "service vncserver stop"

If I do vncserver -geometry 800x600 from the command line it works, I get the 800 x 600 desktop.

But when I replace the geometry line on /etc/sysconfig/vncservers it does not seem to apply.

I have
VNCSERVERSARGS[2]="-geometry 800x600 -nolisten tcp -nohttpd"

But I am still getting the 1024x768 desktop
