Might be worth trying the current 2.6.22 kernel (2.6.22.1-41, IIRC).
There seemed to be something wrong with 2.6.22.1-33 (lots of people complained), I think maybe with udev .

Already tried that, but no change on this machine. Still won't boot. It's something very early on, possibly a change in the ata_piix driver?
