Have a look at the mplayer man file.  The dvd://1 instruction means to
play the main title on the disc (1) being the default.  And -dvd-device
specifying the device (/dev/dvd being the default).

I don't know if the error about dvd://1 is down to it not finding your
DVD drive, or whether you don't have the files installed to play DVDs.
I think you should post us the output from running:  ls -al /dev
