Admitting a lack of knowledge here, what is the best way to run an

You seem to have gotten a lot of answers which told you not to do that,
or do something else, etc, what you want at minimum is:
ssh -X user@remote
Other useful stuff:
-C - compress everything, useful for slow links
(say <10 Mbit)
-c blowfish - uses less CPU than the default crypto
I do this from my laptop regularly.
