Is the installed yum and it's dependencies OK ? rpm -V yum python rpm rpm-libs fedora-release python-sqlite2 python-urlgrabber yum-metadata-parser
I replied: ==> On the bad laptop the rpm -V command showed prelinking changes with rpm libs. I ran ldd on one of the libs and discovered some old gcc and pthreads libraries in /usr/local/lib. I removed the old /usr/local/lib gcc and pthreads libraries and now everything works fine. <== So my laptop is working now and my confidence in yum is restored.
