Yesterday I connected via wire and tried yum update. Got following response:

Thanks, Chris for your help. You were heading in the right direction.
The final solution came via the yum list:

Is the installed yum and it's dependencies OK ?
rpm -V yum python rpm rpm-libs fedora-release python-sqlite2
python-urlgrabber yum-metadata-parser

I replied:

On the bad laptop the rpm -V command showed prelinking changes with rpm libs.

I ran ldd on one of the libs and discovered some old gcc and pthreads
libraries in /usr/local/lib. I removed the old /usr/local/lib gcc and
pthreads libraries and now everything works fine.

So my laptop is working now and my confidence in yum is restored.

Thanks again to Chris for his help.

I get essentially the same response with any yum command.
Any ideas?

Thanks.
