Thanks for the reply. The one place I found that indicated the same
symptoms  was:

However, I could not find the " /etc/modules.d/alsa" file they referred
to on my FC6 system.

Try adding the line mentioned in the link to /etc/modprobe.conf and
rebooting to see if that helps.  A shot it the dark, but what the heck.

Adding "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" to /etc/modprobe.conf did the trick. I now have stereo
sound.
