Hi Frank, I hear you but I fail to see how a Xwindows set of files not running could aid a hacker. As for the root password it should be protected by the passwrd files. When school starts again I will ask the students in Computer Engineering what they think.
Every program might contain an error that could give a normal user the way to get root rights. Most exploits on Linux systems are local exploits. In special Xorg that is a mix of a lot of other programs. See an example from today here: http://kerneltrap.org/node/7228 Cheers, Frank
