I can't say that I've ever come across GRUB destroying partitions,
despite all manner of fiddling over the years.  I wonder whether you'd
partitioned your hard drive using one of those tools that puts its
information somewhere that it shouldn't, so it overlapped the MBR.

Using FC 4, 5, 6 & 7, plus CentOS 5.  Today, it's FC7.
