Then it's going to try and boot an OS, and the kernel line provides the parameters that the kernel wants to boot, in the format that the kernel needs. GRUB's out of the equation by that time. -- (This box runs Centos 5.0, my others still run FC 4, 5, 6, & 7, in case that's important to the thread.)
