I remember being offered the option to install Gnome, KDE or a third DTE (Xfce?). I chose none, and got it :-) Which, btw is a definite improvement over older RH/Fedora installs. So I don't see any Gnome conspiracy here.
I'm pretty sure the vast majority of users would choose KDE if they were given a clear choice.
