If you're using KDE it's probably
KDE Control Center/Regional & Accessibility/Accessibility/Keyboard Filters/Use
Slow Keys   ----   make sure that's not turned on
If you're using Gnome, you're on your own, but there's probably some similar
setting somewhere

I must have been mad to go and change it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But thanks to your suggestion I've learned as well how to get rid of
the annoying system bell!
