Before you activate the connection you need to do the setup where you specify
the phone number to call and the like. Plus you might want to turn on
the dial out on demand feature (auto instead of manual). That error message
makes it seem like you hadn't done that set up yet.
I just set up my dial up configuration on Fedora 7 a couple of days ago and
it didn't seem to be hard to do. I didn't have the modem detection issue
that you did though.
