The last new one I bought still came with a restore DVD. (I have a
Vista restore DVD for a Toshiba laptop around here somewhere.) I
have not gotten around to trying Vista - I don't think the version I
have will work in a virtual machine...

Desktops are normally built from parts, and get Linux installed from
the start.
