No errors in X's log files.  X comes up fine and initializes, but the
session does not start.

Tried removing all .gnome* and .gconf* files from my home directory -- made
no difference.

It is likely a consequence of F7 having a buggy kernel. (Several
kernel bugs have been reported here.) In case FC6 kernel is still in
your computer, try switching to that kernel.
