It depends on what effects you are looking for.
kwin 3.5 already has composite support - while not compiz-beryl style,
it does work out of the box on both OSS drivers (ATI, Intel) and closed
drivers (ATI, nVidia) with no apparent glitches.

You can configure it using Control Center -> Desktop -> Window behavior.
(Yep, KDE is a bit weak when it comes to logical UIs...)

As for using compiz/beryl out of the box, well, last time I checked,
both replace kwin (which has a far more extensive feature-set compared
to metacity/etc making it a big no-no for me) and play badly with the
KDE pager. In short, for now, I'd suggest people wait for KDE4's new
composite/AiGLX implementation.
