You have a wireless connection problem did you check to see if
yum-updatesd/pirut/pup work when you attach via ethernet cable?
i`m connected with a wire now.
i have a update ready to install and still no notifications of it..
btw.. "notify-send something" works fine...
It's in the xorg-x11-driver-i810 package. That package contains both the
old "i810" driver and the new "intel" driver.
that one is installed.. even all the xorg-x11-drv-***** packages are installed.

I don't think it would be any better under GNOME, that's an issue with any of
the kernel, wpa_supplicant, NetworkManager or your hardware and firmware, not
with KDE.
