These are very hard to support.  There was a recent
success using slmodem-2.9.11-20070505.tar.gz and
ungrab-winmodem-20070505.tar.gz that it supports the
motorola sm56k modem.  However, why not check out the
smartlink ones, they work and are not too expensive
