I eventually secured a replacement for the failed board, but had I not done so, your "thinking outside of the box" advice here would have been followed. Thanks.

Heretical thought here...

Surely the Opteron 240 is a 1.4 GHz single core processor? You might
be
better off buying a single-processor motherboard (which will be
cheaper)
and a fast dual core processor.

Having said that, you may have problems finding a combination that
will
take your existing memory, unless you're prepared to replace that,
too.
