Any ideas about what's not going right?
The plot thickens. (Sorry to continue to reply to myself...) I remembered that I had an older FC6 i386 installation on another machine here at home, that I haven't booted in some time, much less updated. I popped the TravelDrive into an open USB 1.1 port on a connected hub and lo' and behold! It mounted immediately without the problems I'm having on the x86_64 installation. I'm attaching the dmesg, and below is the message log excerpt. The only thing that I'm noticing that concerns me is that there's a message from hald stating that the device was mounted on behalf of uid 500 (which I believe is my uid), where as there's no similar line in the x86_64 message log even though it's also configured for auto-mounting removable devices...

May 20 16:29:54 localhost kernel: usb 1-2.3: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 6 May 20 16:29:54 localhost kernel: usb 1-2.3: not running at top speed; connect to a high speed hub May 20 16:29:54 localhost kernel: usb 1-2.3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice May 20 16:29:54 localhost kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices May 20 16:29:59 localhost kernel: scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access Memorex TD Classic 003B PMAP PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 CCS May 20 16:29:59 localhost kernel: SCSI device sdb: 2007040 512-byte hdwr sectors (1028 MB)

May 20 16:30:00 localhost hald: mounted /dev/sdb1 on behalf of uid 500

And for the record, the the older i386 installation is using kernel 2.6.19-1.2895.fc6 where as the newer x86_64 installation (where the problem is located) is using kernel 2.6.20-1.2948.fc6.

Thanks again,
