OK - puzzle solved.  It's the difference in the way the two distros handle the 
drive.  On FC6 it's mounted as /media/sda1 whereas on Mandriva it's mounted 
as /mnt/removable.  I should have thought to check that in a normal konqueror 
window, rather than the automount inspired window.
