No symlinks are needed. New CD/DVD drives should Just Work(tm).

Contacts [1] might suit his needs. As a plus, it uses
evolution-data-server for the backend storage, so Evolution will
automagically use the same contacts database if he uses it to do
email/calendaring. (It's really easy to install too, thanks to the
excellent work of Jesse Keating in packaging it - a simple "yum install
contacts" as root should do it.)
