The syntax is command name, name of domain to query, @address of DNS server to query, as well as other options can be supplied. You've not asked that domain server a domain name to look up. dig example.com Asks your default name server to resolve example.com dig example.com @127.0.0.1 Asks the name server at 127.0.0.1 to resolve example.com -- (This box runs FC6, my others run FC4 & FC5, in case that's important to the thread.)
