I normally try to do a couple of tests at different times to see if they are the same. Just after a system is booted is probably the worst time to check. >From the hdparm man page: For meaningful results, this operation should be repeated 2-3 times on an otherwise inactive system (no other active processes) with at least a couple of megabytes of free memory.
