I guess, the instructions in the release-note are not that clear / accurate. The yumdownloader command (utility) does not check the current version of running kernel. Depending on the command line options gets the appropriate kernel. Just issueing the following, will actualy download the latest kernel source (irrespective of version of currently-kernel). $ yumdownloader -e core-source -e updates-source --source kernel While issueing the following, will get the kernel from the core respository, which in my case happens to match the right version: $ yumdownloader -e core-source --source kernel But as you mentioned, best is to issue version number on the command line just to be safe/sure. Basically, yumdownloader does not check any version of currently-running system/components. Atleast thats my finding.
