No, I'm behind a firewall from hell, so I turned that headache off. >Can you "touch" or create a file in /var/cache/fontconfig? > Yes: [root@coyote ~]# touch /var/cache/fontconfig/test-by-gene [root@coyote ~]# ls -l /var/cache/fontconfig [...] -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 17 20:24 test-by-gene [...] >Does "rpm -V fontconfig" print any odd entries? root@coyote ~]# rpm -V fontconfig SM5....T c /etc/fonts/fonts.conf SM5....T /etc/fonts/fonts.dtd .M...... /usr/share/fonts But I'm afraid I can't decode those very well. :( Clipped from a 'man rpm' S file Size differs M Mode differs (includes permissions and file type) 5 MD5 sum differs D Device major/minor number mismatch L readLink(2) path mismatch U User ownership differs G Group ownership differs T mTime differs Now since the first 2 files are expected to be modified, and I was playing with chmod, the SM5 & T portions can be ignored. But whats that lowercase 'c' trying to tell me? But now after all this rattling around, and the stirring up of the dust of 70+ years in my attic, my ancient wet ram is finally telling me when this first happened. It was about the next day after I'd installed FC6 on this box, or possibly even the same day and I was going around collecting useful things that a default install doesn't install, in this case the msttcorefonts rpm. It was the first package I installed that reported this error. And, we had a discussion, on *this* list, about it at the time, and which slowly faded away into the general noise of the crowd, without ever a fix being offered. I'd also installed a whole bunch of fawncy cursive fonts from Goldenweb.it that I use in OOo and the gimp occasionally, but they IIRC are in /root/.fonts, not here. I don't know if I can find that thread, it may have fallen off the front end of this folder in kmail. And apparently it has as I have a 90 day expiration in effect in this folder, so once back past that, only the stuff I'd marked as important is still there. Sorry. Is there a single file that's dated the day of the install? That would at least give us a date to go searching for in the gmane archives in an effort to prove I haven't totally lost it (yet...)
