vga=792 leads to black screen

I have added vga=792 to the kernel line in grub.conf for several years.I've found that doing this with FC6 leads to a black screen, no littlepenguins at the top or anything. I see the drive spin, and the systemboots up fine, but the console is blank.


I've experienced it with 3 different NVidia and 1 ATI cards.

Anyone know why?
