Compared to your figures, you're right. How do you enable AIGLX?
Just ran mine again and got a little better:

glxgears
29690 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5937.964 FPS
29435 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5886.995 FPS
29941 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5988.032 FPS
29827 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5965.388 FPS
30001 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6000.092 FPS
29802 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5960.290 FPS
